Thiago Silva and Ben Chilwell in pain as Mauricio Pochettino takes first Chelsea training session

Mauricio Pochettino wasted no time putting the Chelsea squad through their paces in his first training session as manager.

After getting his media duties out of the way on Monday, the 51-year-old was straight down to business on Tuesday at the club’s Cobham facility in Surrey – and it looked painful.

England stars Raheem Sterling, Ben Chilwell and Reece James all checked in, as players trained on the pitch before being put to work in a gruelling gym session.

In a sight Chelsea fans will be excited over, midfielders Andrey Santos and Cesare Casadei – fresh from their loan spells at Vasco de Gama and Reading – were involved.

As too was Ian Maatsen, who played 42 games for Burnley on loan last season as he helped the Clarets win the Championship.

Though new recruits Christopher Nkunku and Nicolas Jackson were missing, with the pair to arrive in due course.

And players who were on international duty last month – including Mykhailo Mudryk who is away with Ukraine for the Under-21 Euros – have been given extra time off.

In a clip shared by the west Londoners on Twitter, Pochettino could be seen with his arm around Chilwell as the two engaged in a deep conversation.

With the players seen running the length of the pitch, footage then flashed to those present put through medical tests in the gym.

Chilwell – along with Thiago Silva, Sterling and Armando Broja – back training after his horror knee injury, could all be seen with grimaces on their face.

Chelsea players were warned of a brutal two-week training camp before their tour of the US later this month.

Former Southampton striker Rickie Lambert told talkSPORT in May how they would be pushed more in training than in the games they will be playing.

Pochettino hailed Chelsea’s training centre earlier in the week, as he said: “It’s a fantastic, really nice training ground.
